Meet Gugu Mbatha-Raw, nominated in two categories at the Moët British Independent Film Awards in the categories of Best Actress and Most Promising Newcomer in Belle. Here’s some things you may not know about her.

1. Belle is her career breakthrough performance

Belle premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival in September, after it was announced in July 2013 that Fox Searchlight Pictures would be premiering the film in the US and UK in 2014. She started studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 2001 with her first minor role in television in 2004 and theatre in 2005. This is only her 3rd feature, but the first as a major character. She currently has a few films in the works, some to be released in 2015 and one other currently in the process of filming.

2. She was recently nominated at the Gotham Independent Film Awards

Her 2014 feature, Beyond the Lights, got her nominated for Best Actress at the Gotham Independent Film Awards to be held 1 December 2014. She plays Noni Jean, a hot new artist who has just won a Billboard Music Award without releasing an album and is primed for superstardom, but the pressures of success compel her to nearly end her life. She is saved by a young police officer, Kaz Nichols (played by Nate Parker), who has political ambitions. Drawn to each other, Noni and Kaz fall fast and hard, despite the protests of those around them who urge them to put their career ambitions ahead of their romance. But it is ultimately Kaz’s love that gives Noni the courage to find her own voice and break free to become the artist she was meant to be.

belle3. She believes the message of Belle is of important cultural significance to the UK

In an interview, Mbatha-Raw talks about how important it is to be able to see a person of mixed race in this sort of environment. It all started from an 18th century painting painting of two English women, though one happened to be biracial, something very ahead of its time. It explores the true story of Dido , a women too high born to dine with servants, but too low to dine with the family, leaving her to question her rights.
