Release Window

Here’s the most recent post from Jason Brubaker at FilmmakingStuff.com:

Release Window

When filmmakers talk about a movie release window, they are describing the time between a theatrical run, a TV broadcast and a DVD release. And as a filmmaker, planning a “Release Window” strategy is essential.

But what worked in the old days for studio releases is not applicable to small indie films. Why? Because video on demand distribution has forever changed the game.

A small film will probably not garner theatrical distribution. But a small film, combined with internet marketing and social media could potentially attract a small audience. And this small audience may have extreme enthusiasm for the movie.

So why make your audience wait?

Why not upload your movie to one of the VOD platforms while you’re in the festivals? During this time you could turn on Pre-Order and allow your audience to receive much needed gratification. At Chill, we call this The Social Window. And it’s the first release window you need to think about.

Or not. You could wait (like we did on our first feature) and miss opportunity. It really is up to you.
